2006-07-11 15:44:38

Microsoft's iPod killer. No, it's not the UMPC, it's some other mystery device. And no, no one has any idea what it's going to look like, but the ideas are intriguing. Get this: To attract current iPod users Microsoft is going to let you download for free any songs you've already bought from the iTunes Music Store. They'll actually scan iTunes for purchased tracks and then automatically add those to your account. Is that crazy or what? Also apple is realeasing its "none touch" ipod which enables you t...

My Favourite Places to Eat

2006-06-21 14:56:27

As always, im always am in the quest to find a good place to eat. Like previously, SS2 Murni and William are still at the top list though William has notch up its menus and pricing whilst SS2 Murni still maintains its pricing and quality of food. Unlike William, the food quality fluctuates everytime you gave them a visit. Im still not confident enough with the integrity of the waiter taking your order and the quality taste of the food will be the same like the last time you came. I've also recently encou...

At room temperature, the IBM-Georgia Tech chip operates at 350GHz

2006-06-20 14:16:11

IBM and Georgia Tech have coaxed a chip to run at 500GHz, a record for a silicon-based device, by dropping the temperature to minus 451 degrees Fahrenheit. The experiment is part of a project to explore the ultimate speed limits of silicon-germanium (SiGe) chips. SiGe chips are similar to standard silicon chips, but they also contain germanium for better performance and lower power consumption. Adding germanium, however, increases the price of producing wafers and chips that come out of the wafers, ...

Bill Gates' e-mail to employees

2006-06-19 12:29:12

I wanted to take a moment to share some of my thoughts, as well. As Steve's mail indicates, I've decided that two years from now, in July 2008, I want to devote more time to the work of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Right now and for the next two years, my full-time job is here at Microsoft, and my part-time job remains the Foundation. Beginning in July 2008, I will switch that, to be full-time at the Foundation, while remaining involved with Microsoft as Chairman and an advisor on key developm...

Recharge In Flight Without AC Outlets

2006-06-16 11:30:13

Now this is a very interesting device. InflightPower.com has announced its InFlight Powe USB Unit which allows you to charge small electronic devices via a standard headphone jack found in most airline seats. That means that you never have to worry about running out of juice when flying cross country or overseas with your iPod, PDA, cell phone or DVD player -- if the device can recharge via USB. The 12 ounce device works by storing energy from the headphone jack and relaying that energy to the USB connec...

2006-06-15 11:38:11

Alky (pronounced "AL-KEE") is a tool that allows you to convert a Windows executable to a Mac OS X or Linux binary. We are focused on high-end gaming at the moment, though we will support other applications in the future. Our binary translation layer is already working fully for OS X and Linux support is in progress. Of course, Windows applications use a very different set of libraries from Linux or OS X applications so we are also working on a library called LibAlky that will provide those Windows librarie...

OLED illuminated surfaces

2006-05-30 13:21:58

Imagine a house without a single light fixture - but instead walls, ceilings, furnishings, and accessories all sources of light. Thanks to research at Princeton University and the University of Southern California (USC), almost any surface in a building can become a light source with OLEDs. Researchers have made a critical advancement from what was once single-color displays to highly efficient and long-lasting natural light source called OLEDs (organic light-emitting diodes). The invention was the brain...

Fox confirms X-MEN 4

2006-05-30 13:09:17

Despite the stupid title "X-Men: The Last Stand", Fox Head Tom Rothman has confirmed that there will indeed be an X-Men 4, and probably more after that as well. Now it's all well and good for him to say that now... but if X-Men 3 is a bomb (which we all know it won't be... even if it sucks) then those words will be quickly eaten. So why the title "The Last Stand" then? Well, according to the good folks over at Movie Hole, Rothman offers the following explanation: “It's the conclusion of this trilogy...

Google Checkout

2006-05-30 11:57:56

What is Google Checkout going to be? I think it will be a shopping cart system to help websites accept payment for their items online. The money site owners make will be deposited into a holding account at Google — just like AdSense works. Isn't this starting to sound a lot like PayPal? Who knows, they could even offer a Google branded Mastercard "debit card" like PayPal's ATM/Debit Card — after all, the domain googlemastercard.com is registered to Google too. If this is indeed what they are pl...

Yachts, Ferraris and guns. Gizmondo’s chiefs have a lot of explaining to do, write Anthony James and Michael Gillard LIFE was good for Carl Freer a year ago. He was on a salary of more than £1m. He was chauffeured to work in a Maybach limousine. The value of his company — British-based, but with its shares listed in America — had topped $1 billion. Things couldn’t have been better. His company, Gizmondo Europe, had just launched a hand-held computer gaming device, which, according to Freer...

Why do we say 'um', 'er', or 'ah' when we hesitate in speaking?

2006-05-10 15:41:50

For example, speakers of Mandarin Chinese often say"zhege" which roughly translates as “this”. In English we say "um", "er", "ah", or other vocalisations for reasons that linguists are not entirely sure about. "Um", "er", and “ah” contain what linguists call "neutral vowel sounds" making them among the easiest sounds to make. It may be that they can be said without a great deal of thought too. So that may be part of the answer. "Um", "er", and "ah" are what linguists call "fillers". "Fillers" hel...
