There’s a horror story behind my all time favorite URL shortener. There is nothing shorter than 4 letter domain. The best i could think of for a .my domain is a.my would be nice (taken) i dont know who owns it, im guessing all the 1 letter .my are fully squatted. J.MP (JUMP) is my all time favorite url shortener now.

A little trick i learn from Liewcf.com is that for fast url shortening, all you have to do is to just add a j.mp/ in front of your url bar and you’re done. See screenshot:

The reason i use this a lot is that sometimes i need to transfer a damn fucking long url to my iPhone (for image transferring, imageshack long ass url), hence i dont wanna type everything, using j.mp shortens up nicely, but theres one problem.

YOU CANT DIFFERENCIATE l and I (That’s lowercase L and uppercase i) IT LOOKS THE FUCKING SAME! and because of this i cant really transfer or re-type the url on my iPhone. I hope the people in j.mp bit.ly or any URL shortening would remove L’s and i’s in their salt or just show a different font that can differenciate l and I. Please … pretty please.

l vs I

Ok … WordPress default font has a difference

Apple haters and Android fanboys (or any other fanboys for that matter) has been ranting about the reception issues with the iPhone 4 with the way we hold it. Steve says in his emails is that all phones have a sensitive area where a certain part of your hand is covering the antenna causing attenuation which results in drop signals. iPhone 4 is not alone at this matter, take a look at these phones below which are having the same results:

Examples of cellphones other than iPhone 4 affected by holding it:

HTC Droid Incredible:

Lets go back a little down in memory lane. Remember when we first got our Streamyx 384kbps (^^”) LOL, that was quite a while back and it’s like having and EDGE phone nowadays. That amazing feeling i had that really struck me was the fact that we evolve from dial-up to 24 hours always online broadband, where you need not have to worry about long dial-up time phone bills anymore. My first download and i recall clearly was downloading CSI through iMesh.

When Unifi first came out 1st phase at TTDI, i was excited as a little boy waiting for christmas. It wasn’t the same feeling i had when i first got my Streamyx, but the change in lifestyle use of internet was definitely drastic. Having 20mbit uplink changes everything. (Of course the 20mbit download speeds up most of the things too).

A few examples: I sync & backup more stuff to the cloud now, i no longer store my downloaded programs like i use to, i download only h.264 720/1080p movies only, i dont download porn anymore; but STREAM porn now (^^”) on demand! These are the kind of changes i meant. Different lifestyle usage of the internet.

Another new way of our interconnected life i discover after HSBB Unifi was that i now remote desktop to my home more frequently and i finally understood and vision the future of cloud computing. Ok enough memory lane and the wonders of HSBB Unifi. Let’s get back to my title of this article. Sharing is Caring!

As a Unifi user, we should share, because Sharing is Caring. What i’m teaching you today is how to share using a simple and sophisticated really good freeware program i found called HFS (Http File Server). HFS is a very simple HTTP server that does a very good job on one thing, SHARE! It has a really good built in and highly customizable file directory listing system that integrates with its web server running on your pc. The best of all its a single file hfs.exe without any dependencies like the shitty missing .NET framework error you get from those shitty .NET programs out there.

Before you can properly use HFS, there are few things you must do beforehand. Basing on a perspective of a Unifi customer, or any home network setup for that matter, we are confined by the internal subnetwork assigned by your router. This means that you are actually not part of the “Internet” so to say but you are a part of your “Home Network”. Your router is part of the “Internet” and its sharing its “Internet” with you people in the house. So here is what you have to do:

Setting up DMZ

Connect through Wifi or LAN to your D-Link N Router (DIR-615).

Using Internet Explorer 8 type in http://192.168.0.1 and login using admin/<password> (The reason im recommending IE because this aint a website, its a admin panel & IT SHOULD by standards work with IE. I had incident where the AJAX or Javascript went nuts with Firefox and Chrome)

Click on ADVANCED -> Firewall & DMZ

Follow as screenshot but replace the IP with your internal IP. To get internal IP Windows XP: On bottom right tray bar, a blink blink flashy computer screen icon, double click -> Status tab. Look for your IP it should start with 192.168.0.XXX. Windows Vista/7: OMG Figure it out your selves, so complex.

Save Settings.

What this does is that it puts your computer with that internal IP in the De-Militarize-Zone (DMZ) which means that whatever traffic from the internet world your router gets right now will be re-directed to you and vice versa. In this case you are actually part of the “Internet” now. To get your internet public IP, and the easiest way that i’ve been doing for years is to go to http://ipchicken.com (Kevin Rose taught me this on TechTV) or if you can’t remember chicken then just go http://whatismyip.com

Once steps above are completed, and you are now part of the “Internet” HFS and other apps that requires direct peer connection would work flawlessly without any hassle of port forwarding etc. (which is another complex settings in the router which i dont want to get into, DMZ works best for me)

Setting up free Dynamic DNS Domain

What is this for? Since Unifi provides a dynamic IP to you every time you get connected, there is no way for you to update your friends of your latest public IP, because of this problem, therefore mankind has created a dynamic domain system built in the router. This means that you only need to remember one domain name, and it will automatically translate to your router’s IP address. Here’s how you configure it.

Get your self an account at http://www.dyndns.com/

Login and then click on My Account -> Add Host Service
‘

Pick a hostname i.e. arsyan.dyndns.org

Click on the link that auto fills the field with your current IP (This ip will change once you configure your router to auto update Dyndns if you had a change of IP) Once you’re done picking your hostname and domain, click Add To Cart. Dont worry it will charge you $0.00 for the available “sohai” domains.

Now go back to your router admin window http://192.168.0.1 and click on Maintenance -> DDNS Setting (on the left column) -> Enter your Dyndns username password and hostname & domain name you’ve chosen.

Test (If successful) then Save Settings. DONE.

Congratulations! Now that you successfully completed the 2 hardest part, now i only need to show you how to use HFS, if you already know how to, then you can skip the next part and enjoy your HFS with your fellow Unifi users (^^)v.

Setting up HFS

Download HFS (Http File Server)

Extract it somewhere, since there’s no installation i suggest you put it as standards at C:\Program Files\HFS\

Execute it (Double Click on the file). Now the first thing you have to do is to check weather your HFS is working or not, sometimes due to “Special” & “Highly Secured” sohai firewall installed on your computer, it blocks you from even accessing your own port 80 which is the standard port for HTTP transfers.

Open your favorite web browser, and type http://localhost or http://127.0.0.1 and see if you can see the HFS web interface loaded on your browser. If you can’t that means there are some firewall programs in your computer that you need to disable, heck, disable windows default firewall program also if you have to!

On the left column of HFS you’ll see a Virtual File System, this is where all your shared folder should be listed down. Right click on the house icon -> Add folder from disk.

Pick the folder you want to share your stuff, when prompted Real Folder or Virtual Folder, always pick Real Folder. I dont really know the difference but just follow what the Hint says

You can also set a password for your HFS by right click home icon -> Set User/Pass. Then only certain people only can access your HFS. Like mine i only share if he/she shares his stash with me >:) email me if you want to trade arsyan at gmail.

YOU’RE DONE! Now you can share your DDNS url http://arsyan.is-a-geek.com (whatever domain you chose) with your friends and they can download stuff of you.

Please ask me questions in comments if you have any. Enjoy and remember, Sharing is Caring! (^^)v Hidup HSBB Unifi!

I don’t know weather I should get the iPhone4 first or the iPad, iPad seems 3/4 baked to me, but the iPhone4 is solid. Oh well, i guess i have to decide weather to own it or re-sell it to others. Can’t wait for it to arrive.

There is actually no obvious need for me to get the iPhone4, however there is an obvious need for an iPad. An analogy by @alexwnl said that if you already have an old oven, you can still bake cakes and heat up your food, upgrading to a new oven with more bells and whistles is definitely better. However its not the same as buying a fridge (iPad) it’s a totally different usage and device

If all laptops, notebooks, and netbooks are DVD drive less in the future, USB is the only interface of recovering or installing your operating system.

I own a Sony VAIO-P (VGN-P15G) and the only way to re-install my OS is by having a external DVD drive. There is a tool from Microsoft called Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool that allows you to make a USB thumbdrive to be bootable exactly as the Windows 7 RTM (Release to Manufacture) DVD. You would have to acquire a Windows 7 DVD, Any Windows 7 RTM DVD works. They’re all the same as of this day. The only difference is when you enter your original serial key for activation.

Use any free ISO maker you can download. I use Ultra ISO. Other ISO should work fine as well but i haven’t tested it. Go figure. Make the ISO from your Windows 7 RTM DVD. Once that is done download Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool select the ISO and choose USB thumbdrive option and let it burn…

Quick Links Direct Downloads:
1. Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool
2. Windows 7 Pro 32bit RTM ISO
3. Free ISO Maker

Want to use Windows 7 Ultimate for free?
There is a built in feature in Windows 7 that allows you to extend your trial of Windows 7 from 30 days to 120 days extra before activation. If you don’t have the money to buy the original software, just use the trial period to the extend it. This process is called “re-arm”. Is something like re-arming a bomb timer. Follow the instruction in screenshot below:

Note: You should only re-arm when your trial period of 30 days is over. If you re-arm on the 15th day trial then it would go back to 30 days and you loose one re-arm cycle. When you reached your re-arm limit, reformat your computer and re install Windows 7 from your ready made USB Thumbdrive. You do it once every few months. Thats about time to spring clean your pc anyway thats what i’m doing now.

Ok i never knew about this because im so used with my UK Paypal account that i can add funds to my paypal whenever i want. When i tried adding funds to the Malaysia Paypal account it wont allow me, basically it has to charge your credit card for it. I just dont get it why cant we just top it up, im guessing people will topup using creditcard and transfer to bank as cash without any cash advance fee. Maybe thats why. Hmm …

Codename “Natal Project” now has been called Kinect. To be honest, i kinda loose interest in the WiiMote already because of its simulating movement to represent action in the screen. Which is not entirely “Motion Capture” movement technology which is used in animating models in movies. Sony has done one that mimics the motion capture movements but there is no news of release date from them.

UPDATE: Just found out they are also releasing its controller in Fall 2010. Playstation Move. Watch the trailer below, courtesy of IGN.com.

Kinect for XBOX 360 however changes everything. No more need for a controller, all it does is capture your movements with its “web cam”. It’s similar to what Sony did, but this obviates the need to hold anything in either hand.

Although this eliminates the complexity of having a sophisticated device, it does however has its drawbacks. You will notice that there will be a lot of lag between the movement and what happens on the screen. For a FPS gamer especially, this will be extremely aggravating. Another thing in mind is that with a controller in your hand, it looks like as though you are actually interfacing with the console, but without it, people who play them would look kinda idiotic. Without having to hold a physical something, you feel like as though your movements are not translating properly on the screen. And of course definitely no more playing games on your couch. Checkout the video below courtesy of Mashable.com

Ok WordPress 3.0 is out and apparently its revolutionary, well always 1 version leap is always a revolution, so im starting to constantly blog about technology and what sort using this WordPress 3.0 platform. It helps me learn how to use, and customize for my future customers or friends who asks me questions. I am very pleased with the new default theme rather than the blue small colum default theme that LiewCF.com uses.

What im trying to figure out now is how do i import my old posts to this new wordpress, can i just add to the wp_posts table, and everything will just work it self out? If so that would be superb. I will try to digg up my old post later and see if i can import it here manually. Jia you me!
